II - English, the language that links us!

STREET SURVEY

The challenge was finding out about the English language skills of the Oliveirenses.

Therefore, we made an Inquiry and we went out to ask the people we met on the streets of Oliveira de Azeméis about their knowledge of English.

We interviewed 135 people, at random, and asked them the initial question:

• Can you speak English?

If the answer was “Yes”, we asked further questions about their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.

According to the survey, 57 out of 135 people cannot speak or understand English.

The remaining 78 have different levels of proficiency in English. However, according to the data, it is easier to understand spoken or written English than to speak or write in English.

This wasn’t an accurate or truly reliable research but the data we collected confirmed our suspicions and matched our aims - showing that it is important to invest in education and in adult education, in particular, namely in English, the language that links us!!!
